Computer screens are procured in accordance with the internationally recognised TCO standard for VDU workstations in order to keep radiation exposure as low as possible.
If the actual field exposure on and around a desk or workstation is measured, the limit value for alternating electric fields (ELF), which should be below 10 V/m according to the TCO standard, is often exceeded significantly or very significantly. This is due to the mains connection cables, extension cables, multiple sockets and desk lamps required for the devices at the office workstation.
When shielded earthing cables are used, experience shows that (depending on the measurement method) the value of the alternating electrical fields on laptops is reduced in most cases from 50 – 300 V/m to 1 – 6 V/m. Earthing plugs only conduct the earth contact, not the mains voltage or the data!
A prerequisite for the dissipation of alternating fields is the proper functioning of the existing electrical system and the protective equipotential bonding.
